Newt transcriptome offers insight into tissue regeneration
Feb. 18, 2013 ? Scientists have identified protein families expressed during tissue regeneration in newts, providing the groundwork for research into whether particular sets of genes are used for the purpose. The transcriptome -- the map of all RNA molecules -- of the newt is published this week in BioMed Central's open access journal Genome Biology. Notophthalmus viridescens is a useful model in regenerative medicine, thanks to its ability to regenerate tissue, and this data gives insights into the mechanisms behind this process.
N. viridescens, the common newt, is native to North America, and an urodelian amphibian. Newt and salamander genomes are enormous; currently too big to sequence, but their potential to regenerate entire limbs, along with parts of the central nervous system, has fascinated scientists for over 200 years. Thomas Braun, Thilo Borchardt at the Max Planck Institutes, Patagonis Tsonis at the University of Dayton and their colleagues sequenced a collection of healthy and regenerated tissues from newts, and converged them into one comprehensive transcriptome. Their analysis identified 826 proteins specific for urodeles, and several newly identified proteins that they believe may play important roles in regeneration process unique for urodeles. Their data also outline genes that appear only in regenerating, but not uninjured material, which will be of interest in regenerative medicine.
The transcriptome is not complete, but serves as a matrix for further analyses. The authors believe that their findings represent only the tip of the iceberg: 'Our data provide the groundwork for mechanistic experiments to answer the question whether urodeles utilize proprietary sets of genes for tissue regeneration.' They continue: 'The newly established de novo transcriptome [...] will be an indispensable resource for a better understanding of regenerative events in newts and facilitate the identifications of molecules [...] that control this fascinating process.'

Signs of a thaw with Serbia as Kosovo turns five
PRISTINA (Reuters) - Kosovo marked five years since it seceded from Serbia on Sunday, with flag-filled streets, a military parade and growing signs of progress in EU-mediated talks to regulate relations between the Balkan neighbors.
Majority-Albanian Kosovo declared independence in 2008 with the backing of the Western powers which waged a NATO air war in 1999 to wrest control of the territory from late Serb strongman Slobodan Milosevic.
Recognized by roughly half the world but not yet a member of the United Nations, Kosovo is one of the poorest countries in Europe, its government still challenged by minority Serbs in the north who reject the secession.
But Western diplomats say a new push by EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton to 'normalize relations' between Belgrade and Pristina, and integrate the north, is bearing fruit.
"We are seriously committed to normalizing relations with Serbia," Hashim Thaci, Kosovo's prime minister and a former guerrilla commander, told reporters. He and his Serbian counterpart, Ivica Dacic, meet again in Brussels on February 19-20.
"We will move swiftly towards membership of NATO and the European Union, but also the United Nations," Thaci said.
The national flags of Kosovo, Albania and the United States flew from lampposts and balconies in the capital, Pristina.
Members of the Kosovo Security Force, an embryo army, marched through the city, where huge yellow letters spelled the word 'Newborn' and were painted with the flags of the 98 countries so far to have Recognized Kosovo.
Serbia says it will never join them, while its ally Russia, a veto-holder in the U.N. Security Council, stands in the way of Kosovo winning a seat at the United Nations.
PULL OF EU
But Serbia is under pressure from the EU to cooperate with its former province and loosen its hold on the northern Serb pocket if the bloc is to move ahead with Belgrade's bid to join.
With fellow ex-Yugoslav republic Croatia set to join the EU on July 1, Dacic's government has signaled greater flexibility on Kosovo, determined to clinch EU accession talks within months and send a signal of stability to much-needed foreign investors.
"Over these five years Serbia has understood the reality of the situation in Kosovo," Nenad Djurdjevic of the Belgrade-based Forum for Ethnic Relations told the Serbian news agency Tanjug.
"The previous government understood that, but didn't say it, while the current government admits that Serbia has no influence in Kosovo and must resolve relations with that Kosovo."
The EU-led talks have yielded agreement on the exchange of liaison officers to improve communication and joint management of their border, including a customs regime. Belgrade has also agreed to recognize Kosovo vehicle license plates, identification papers and university diplomas.
Implementation has sometimes been patchy, and the talks have yet to resolve the thorny issue of the Serb north.
NATO still has a 6,000-strong peacekeeping force in Kosovo, almost 14 years since it went to war to halt the massacre and expulsion of Albanians by forces under Milosevic fighting a two-year counter-insurgency campaign.
Tensions in the north, and a stubborn reputation for graft and organized crime, have hurt Kosovo's efforts to attract foreign investors and create jobs for its young population of 1.7 million people.
"The only thing to be proud of is the young population and hope for the future," said Gazmend Gjonbalaj, 24, a U.S.-educated IT engineer. "But it's shameful that our politicians are driving around 50,000-euro cars while much of the population does not have enough food on the table."

Video: In Arizona, Americans taking border security into their own hands
>>> as you just heard, one of the big issues in the immigration debate is border security . despite progress claimed by the federal government , nbc's mark potter found that for some americans who live near mexico, the border is anything but secure.
>> reporter: in the rugged terrain south of tucson, arizona , advocates concerned buzz border security took matters into their own hands and placed motion sensitive hidden cameras on known smuggling trails and this is their video, revealing wave after wave of mexican drug and immigrant smugglers, some of them heavily armed who cross the border and travel miles north inside the united states .

Cogliano scores 2 in 3rd, Ducks beat Red Wings 5-2
DETROIT (AP) ? Andrew Cogliano scored two of Anaheim's three goals in the third period Friday night, sending the surging Ducks to a 5-2 victory over the Detroit Red Wings.
Viktor Fasth made 26 saves to become the first goalie in seven years to win his first seven career starts. The 30-year-old Fasth is considered a first-year player and not a rookie by the NHL because he is older than 25.
Cogliano snapped a 2-all tie just 1:02 into the third and Bobby Ryan connected less than a minute later. Cogliano capped the outburst with his fourth of the season at 18:11.
Matt Beleskey and Corey Perry each had a goal and an assist for Anaheim, which won its third straight and seventh in eight games. Ryan Getzlaf added two assists.
Joakim Andersson got his first career goal and added an assist, and Tomas Tatar also scored for Detroit, which was without top-six forwards Pavel Datsyuk (upper body, day-to-day) and Johan Franzen (hip flexor) because of injuries. Jimmy Howard stopped 33 shots.
Cogliano and Ryan scored 48 seconds apart early in the third period.
Cogliano tipped in a pass from Saku Koivu, and Ryan fired in his own rebound for his fifth goal at 1:50. Both goals were the result of neutral-zone turnovers by the Red Wings.
Perry capitalized on a turnover in the Detroit zone by putting in his own rebound 7:32 into the second period to tie the score at 2. Red Wings defenseman Ian White fanned on a pass from behind his own net and the puck went to Beleskey, who made a cross-slot pass to Perry.
Tatar's power-play goal gave Detroit a 2-1 lead 6:32 into the middle period. He put in a rebound for his second goal, both in the last two games.
Andersson opened the scoring 3:01 into the second by beating Fasth from the bottom of the right circle. Beleskey tied it 26 seconds later with his second goal. He beat Howard with a snap shot from the slot.
The first period was scoreless as Anaheim outshot the Red Wings 14-6.
NOTES: Former Red Wings defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom, who retired after last season, was back in Detroit for an autograph signing on Saturday. He and friend Tomas Holmstrom, who also retired after last season, visited their former teammates at the morning skate and attended the game. ... The Red Wings placed forward Todd Bertuzzi on injured reserve. He had missed the previous three games due to a sore back. . Detroit recalled center Gustav Nyquist from its AHL affiliate in Grand Rapids. ... Anaheim goalie Jonas Hiller, who has missed three games with a lower-body injury, could return Saturday in Nashville. ... It was Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau's 400th game as an NHL head coach.

Facebook Says Hackers Breached Its Computers - NYTimes.com
Facebook admitted that it was breached by sophisticated hackers in recent weeks, two weeks after Twitter made a similar admission. Both Facebook and Twitter were breached through a well-publicized vulnerability in Oracle?s Java software.
In a blog post late Friday afternoon, Facebook said it was attacked when a handful of its employees visited a compromised site for mobile developers. Simply by visiting the site, their computers were infected with malware. The company said that as soon as it discovered the malware, it cleaned up the infected machines and tipped off law enforcement.
?We have found no evidence that Facebook user data was compromised,? Facebook said.
On Feb. 1, Twitter said hackers had breached its systems and potentially accessed the data of 250,000 Twitter users. The company suggested at that time that it was one of several companies and organizations to be have been similarly attacked.
Facebook has known about its own breach for at least a month, according to people close to the investigation, but it was unclear why the company waited this long to announce it. Fred Wolens, a Facebook spokesman, declined to comment.
Like Twitter, Facebook said it believed that it was one of several organizations that were targeted by the same group of attackers.
?Facebook was not alone in this attack,? the company said in its blog post. ?It is clear that others were attacked and infiltrated recently as well.?
The attacks add to the mounting evidence that hackers were able to use the security hole in Oracle?s Java software to steal information from a broad range of companies. Java, a widely used programming language, is installed on more than three billion devices. It has long been hounded by security problems.
Last month, after a security researcher exposed a serious vulnerability in the software, the Department of Homeland Security issued a rare alert that warned users to disable Java on their computers. The vulnerability was particularly disconcerting because it let attackers download a malicious program onto its victims? machines without any prompting. Users did not even have to click on a malicious link for their computers to be infected. The program simply downloaded itself.
After Oracle initially patched the security hole in January, the Department of Homeland Security said that the fix was not sufficient and recommended that, unless ?absolutely necessary?, users should disable it on their computers completely. Oracle did not issue another fix until Feb. 1.
Social networks are a prime target for hackers, who look to use people?s personal data and social connections in what are known as ?spearphishing? attacks. In this type of attack, a target is sent an e-mail, ostensibly from a connection, containing a malicious link or attachment. Once the link is clicked or attachment opened, attackers take control of a user?s computer. If the infected computer is inside a company?s system, the attackers are able to gain a foothold. In many cases, they then extract passwords and gain access to sensitive data.
Facebook said in its blog post that the updated patch addressed the vulnerability that allowed hackers to access its employees? computers.
Hackers have been attacking organizations inside the United States at an alarming rate. The number of attacks reported by government agencies last year topped 48,500 ? a ninefold jump from the 5,500 attacks reported in 2006, according to the Government Accountability Office.
In the last month alone, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and The Washington Post all confirmed that they were targets of sophisticated hackers. But security experts say that these attacks are just the tip of the iceberg.
A common saying among security experts is that there are now only two types of American companies: Those that have been hacked and those that don?t know they?ve been hacked.

VA decision on burial rights departs from past
WASHINGTON (AP) ? The government has cleared the first burial of a same-sex spouse of a veteran in a national cemetery, but it's far from certain how easy it will be for other gay military couples to win the same benefit.
Who gets buried where is one of the practical decisions that the federal government is grappling with following repeal of the military's don't ask, don't tell policy.
At first glance, Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki's decision to grant burial to a same-sex spouse in Oregon represents a big departure from past federal policy. In 2004, the VA warned the state of Massachusetts that burying the same-sex spouse of a veteran in a state veterans' cemetery could lead to the federal government taking back nearly $12 million in grant money.
Then in 2008, the National Cemetery Association published a directive stating that individuals in same-sex civil unions or marriage are not eligible for burial in a national cemetery or state veterans cemetery that received federal money. Those directives were based on the language of the Defense of Marriage Act, which defines a spouse as a person of the opposite sex who is a husband or a wife. The law is being challenged before the Supreme Court.
Then along came retired Lt. Col. Linda Campbell and her spouse, Nancy Lynchild. Campbell, with help from Oregon officials, pressed the VA to allow Lynchild to be buried at the VA's Willamette National Cemetery.
"My commitment to our country, shown through the service that makes me eligible for burial at Willamette, and the significance of the permanent, lifelong commitment I shared with Nancy, should be sufficient to secure a waiver for her and allow us to be buried together," Campbell wrote to the VA on Jan. 2 shortly after Lynchild's death.
Shinseki has the authority to deem others eligible for burial at a VA cemetery as he believes necessary, regardless of the wording of the Defense of Marriage Act. The VA said in a statement he did not base his decision to grant burial rights based on the couple's marital status but on evidence of a "committed relationship between the individual and the veteran." Also, the department made clear the decision was not intended to create any right or benefit for anyone other than Lynchild.
Still, proponents of the decision said it's a clear indication that individual waiver requests will be taken seriously by Shinseki if other same-sex couples seek to be buried in one of the VA's 131 cemeteries.
"I think you see a lot of the military changing and it makes sense. They are showing every sign of wanting to do what they can do within the bounds of the law," said Gary Buseck, legal director at the Gay and Lesbian Advocates and Defenders, an advocacy group.
Campbell's request began last year when she expressed her frustration to Oregon Labor Commissioner Brad Avakian. In turn, Avakian contacted the VA and noted that Oregon law required equal access to all goods and services for registered domestic partners. He also spoke with the White House, which made clear it was deferring to the VA and wanted to let the process run its course. He said the VA was also communicating with the White House, but he could not say to what degree.
"The attitude at the end was clear that they were working very hard to make this work," Avakian said. "And I'm deeply grateful they spent the time thinking this through carefully and coming to the right conclusion."
Despite the VA's insistence that Shinseki's decision only applied to Campbell and Lynchild, Avakian said he believed the decision sent a clear message that would make it easier for future same-sex couples to gain veterans' burial benefits.
"I don't think there's any way to get around the fact that is a precedent-setting strong message," he said.
When asked if the Obama administration welcomed Shinseki's decision, White House spokeswoman Shin Inouye said: "The president has made clear that his administration will treat same-sex couples as fairly as possible, consistent with existing law, and VA's actions are consistent with that policy."

Olympic 'Blade Runner' charged in murder
South African police have charged Olympic star Oscar Pistorius with the murder of his girlfriend, who was shot in the sprinter's home Thursday.
Pistorius, 26, kept weapons at his gated, luxury South African home as a means of protection against his country's soaring crime rate, according to a British writer who had exclusive access to the Olympic sprinter.Oscar Pistorius' court appearance will likely take place Friday. (AP Photo)In the early hours of Thursday morning, the 400 meter runner ? the first man to compete in the Olympics and Paralympics ? is believed to have used part of his weapons collection to tragically gun down his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp.
Early reports had the alleged incident being reported as an accident, but police spokesperson Brigadier Denise Beukes told the Associated Press that information did not come from police and that "it would be very premature and very irresponsible of me to say what actually has happened.""There have been allegations," Beukes said. "We are not sure."
According to those initial reports, Pistorius mistook Steenkamp, a 30-year-old television personality and model, for an intruder as she entered his residence at 3 a.m. and allegedly shot her four times in the arms and head.According to the Associated Press, police said there had "previously been incidents and allegations of a domestic nature at the home of Mr. Oscar Pistorius."
According to British writer Jonathan McEvoy, who was given unprecedented access to Pistorius in a broad-ranging 2011 Daily Mail interview, the athlete held serious concerns for his personal safety, perhaps unsurprisingly given his nation's appalling record of violence.
"I spoke to him at his house and when we went upstairs to his bedroom so that our photographer could take photos of his running blades, that was when I saw the weapons," said McEvoy, when contacted by Yahoo! Sports by telephone on Thursday.
[Also: IOC's poor decision to add golf costs wrestling its spot in Olympics]
"There was the pistol by the bed, the machine gun up against the wall, the baseball bat under the window, a cricket bat too. He was concerned by safety and security to a high level, there was no doubt about that."Pistorius has earned well from appearance fees and endorsements during his athletic career and also came from a privileged background, thanks to his mining magnate father Henke, who told reporters he was "shocked" by Thursday's events.
Pistorius' house in the Silver Lakes community on the eastern edge of South Africa's capital, Pretoria, is in an attractive compound permanently guarded by armed security, yet that was not enough to allay his concerns about being the victim of violent crime.
"We had been talking at his training base in Johannesburg and he drove me up [to his home] to continue the interview," McEvoy continued. "You had to stop and speak to the guard on the way in and on the way out. "I think I mentioned that the security must mean that area was safe, but he said that wasn't necessarily the case as the guards could be 'in on it.'" Indeed, Pretoria news reports detailed the apprehension of a crime ring that operated from the Silver Lakes area in 2010, one that included police officers in what was known as a "blue light" crime.
Steenkamp and Pistorius, known as the Blade Runner for the prosthetic blades on his legs that allowed him to compete, are understood to have met in November and embarked upon a whirlwind romance. The actress' Twitter account painted the picture a joyful relationship when she asked her followers what they were planning for Valentine's Day.
Oscar Pistorius and girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp pose in Johannesburg last week. (REUTERS) Over the past week, Pistorius and Steenkamp spent time with Great Britain 400 meter runner Martyn Rooney, who had been in South Africa training and socialized with the pair.
Pistorius remained in custody as of Thursday and was said to be distraught, according to police.
"We found a 9mm pistol at the scene, a 26-year-old man was taken into custody," the spokesman added.
The runner's agent, Peet Van Zyl, attempted to visit Pistorius at the Pretoria police station where he was being held before a court appearance that will likely take place Friday, according to News24. The New York Times reported that police officials said they planned to oppose Pistorius? expected application for bail.
Reports from South Africa revealed Steenkamp's body was removed from the home at around 8 a.m.
Pistorius reached the semifinals of the 400m and the final of the 4x400m relay at the London Olympics, before later adding his fifth and sixth Paralympic golds.

U.S. health advocates ask government for safe sugar limits in drinks
(Reuters) - Anti-obesity advocates who want to curb Americans' sugar habit on Wednesday asked the government to set a safe level for added sugars in soda and other beverages.
The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI), which is leading the regulatory push, has been urging the government take actions to reduce sugar consumption by Americans since the late 1970s.
The consumer group's 54-page regulatory petition filed with the Food and Drug Administration on Wednesday is part of a broad public health campaign to trim waistlines in the United States, where more than two-thirds of adults and nearly one-third of children aged 2 to 19 are overweight or obese.
Sugar-sweetened drinks are a significant source of extra calories in the U.S. diet and are closely linked with weight gain, which often accompanies serious and costly illness such as diabetes and heart disease.
If history holds true, the latest request will not result in swift action from the FDA. The American Beverage Association (ABA) and other industry groups have aggressively, and often successfully, fought efforts to reduce sugary drink consumption via regulation or taxes. Among other things, industry has said that such efforts unfairly blame a single product for the nation's obesity crisis.
CSPI Executive Director Michael Jacobson, hopes Wednesday's action will force soda makers to change their ways.
"As currently formulated, Coke, Pepsi, and other sugar-based drinks are unsafe for regular human consumption," Jacobson said. "The FDA should require the beverage industry to re-engineer their sugary products over several years, making them safer for people to consume, and less conducive to disease."
TOO MUCH SWEET STUFF
Americans, on average, consume 18 to 23 teaspoons of added sugars each day, according to data from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. That's 300 to 400 calories worth of added sugars daily, significantly more than experts consider healthy.
The American Heart Association advises consuming no more than 6 teaspoons of added sugars per day for women and no more than 9 teaspoons for men.
A typical 20-ounce bottle of soda contains about 16 teaspoons of sugars, often from high-fructose corn syrup.
A Tufts University review of studies published over 17 years found that consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages was the most consistent dietary factor associated with weight gain.
The ABA, the soda industry group, has challenged such links, saying obesity rates have risen even as U.S. consumption of full-calorie sodas has declined.
Americans on average drink 44.6 gallons of soft drinks each year, down from a peak of 54 gallons in 1998, according to Beverage Digest. Diet drinks, water and teas now account for a bigger portion of the soda industry's sales than sugary drinks, fueled by consumer health concerns.
CSPI and its supporters, which include dozens of scientists, doctors and public health departments, hope to convince the beverage companies to make an even bigger shift to low-calorie sugar substitutes.
FDA classifies high-fructose corn syrup and other sugars as "generally recognized as safe." That classification is based on scientific consensus that the ingredient is not harmful under the intended conditions of use.
Scientific consensus is that added sugars are unsafe at current consumption levels, CSPI said.
CSPI's petition asks FDA, which oversees most food products, to set a safe level for added sugars in beverages and to require that the limits be phased in over several years.
PLAYING THE LONG GAME
CSPI has made similar FDA requests before.
The nonprofit sued the agency in 2005 for failing to set sodium limits for food - a move health experts say would help save thousands of lives each year. FDA has not yet set such limits, but food makers have lowered sodium in some products with varying degrees of success.
CSPI scored a victory, though it took years, when FDA required that artery-clogging artificial trans fat be included in food labels starting in 2006. That effort, along with state and city trans fat bans, resulted in a sharp decline in use.
"The lesson from these things is that it takes forever to move things in Washington," CSPI's Jacobson said.
Public health campaigners have a mixed record when it comes to other efforts to cut the consumption of sugary drinks.
In 2006, after a long battle, Coca-Cola Co, PepsiCo Inc and Dr. Pepper Snapper Group Inc surrendered to pressure and agreed to remove high-calorie sodas from U.S. public schools.
New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg's first-of-its-kind ban on super sized sugary drinks in restaurants and other eateries is scheduled to start in March. Industry is challenging the ban, calling it an unconstitutional overreach that burdens small businesses and infringes upon personal liberty.
The soft drink industry has a strong record of defeating high-profile efforts to tax sugary beverages, and two separate ballot measures recently fizzled in California.

U.N. atom talks with Iran fail, no new meeting set
VIENNA (Reuters) - U.N. inspectors returned on Thursday from talks in Tehran with no deal on access to Iran's nuclear sites and no date for new talks, failing to produce even a small signal of hope for wider big power diplomacy aimed at averting a war.
"Despite its many commitments to do so, Iran has not negotiated in good faith," said a Western diplomat accredited to the United Nations' International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna who was not at the talks. "It appears that we now have to ask ourselves if this is still the right tactic."
The deadlock is a chilling signal for a wider effort by six major powers to get Iran to curb a program that they fear could give it the capacity to build a nuclear bomb, something Israel has suggested it will prevent by force if diplomacy fails.
The IAEA and Iran "could not finalize the document" setting out terms for an IAEA inquiry into possible military dimensions of Iran's nuclear program, chief U.N. inspector Herman Nackaerts said at Vienna airport after returning from Iran.
He said no new date had been set for talks that have shown no progress in more than a year, adding: "Time is needed to reflect on the way forward."
The United States, Russia, China, France, Britain and Germany are due to meet Iran for separate talks in Kazakhstan on February 26 to tackle a decade-old row that has already produced four rounds of U.N. sanctions against Iran.
But the Islamic Republic, which denies any military dimension to its work and is asking for acknowledgement that it is entitled to produce nuclear fuel for peaceful purposes, is heading for a presidential election in June.
That fact alone makes it hard for any official to be seen to make concessions to foreign powers, let alone ones that suit Iran's enemies, the United States and Israel, which is widely assumed to be the Middle East's only nuclear-armed power.
"On behalf of the Iranian nation, I say that whoever thinks that the Iranian nation would surrender to pressure is making a huge mistake and will take his wish to the grave," outgoing President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on Thursday, according to state television.
CLOCK TICKING
Yet while talks go nowhere, the diplomatic clock is ticking.
Iran is expanding a stockpile of higher-grade 20-percent-enriched uranium ever closer to levels where a critical mass of weapons-grade material would be only a short step away - something that Israel says would be a "red line" for action.
Washington has also warned, in less direct terms, that it will do what it takes to prevent Iran getting the bomb. Late last year it set a March deadline for Iran to start cooperating with the IAEA's investigation, warning Tehran that it might otherwise be referred to the U.N. Security Council.
Tehran says intelligence information pointing to nuclear weapons research in Iran is forged and baseless.
Iran was first reported to the U.N. Security Council over its nuclear program by the IAEA's 35-nation board in 2006, and was then punished with U.N. sanctions, as well as stricter U.S. and European measures targeting its vital oil exports.
In negotiations since January 2012, the IAEA and Iran have been arguing over how the long-stalled investigation should be conducted, prompting Western diplomats to accuse Iran of endlessly playing for time.
Some diplomats and analysts say Iran is using its talks with the IAEA for leverage in the separate negotiations with world powers which, unlike the IAEA, have the power to ease sanctions.
The IAEA's immediate priority had been to visit the Parchin base southeast of Tehran. It suspects explosives tests relevant to nuclear weapons may have taken place there, perhaps a decade ago, and then been concealed. Tehran denies the accusation.
In a note to member states, the IAEA said it would "continue to work to resolve the remaining differences" and that "the timing for the next meeting will be decided in due course".
"This conversation is on hold and IAEA won't make foolish concessions to Iran," said Mark Hibbs, proliferation expert at the Carnegie Endowment think-tank.

NFL trade rumors 2013: Percy Harvin trade to Seattle Seahawks possible?
Fresh 2013 NFL trade rumors suggest a Percy Harvin trade to the Seattle Seahawks might make sense. One idea that is making the rounds appears to stem from a report on Monday (Feb. 11). That is where a suggestion was made that the Seahawks offer up quarterback Matt Flynn as a trade chip that the Minnesota Vikings could be interested in. A deal like that could save Seattle from parting with any draft picks.
That original rumor sparked ESPN to begin pondering how well this could work for the Vikings. As seen in the 2013 NFL Playoffs, Minnesota is not sold on quarterback Christian Ponder. The team may want to look for a replacement option in the upcoming draft or they could try to pry a backup away from another team. That is where Flynn comes in, as he could certainly offer something new and Seattle is very set with Russell Wilson making the calls now.
A move like this has a lot of fantasy football implications, especially because it could mean a new starting quarterback for Minnesota and a new primary receiver for the Seahawks. Harvin caught 62 passes for 677 yards last season, with all but 10 of those yards coming in the first eight weeks of the season. He actually went down with an injury against the Seahawks in Week 9, bringing an end to his season pretty early.
Though there are plenty of other 2013 NFL trade rumors including Percy Harvin, this one might make a lot of sense for both the Seattle Seahawks and Minnesota Vikings. It's important to point out that neither the original report nor the talk on ESPN has stated that the two sides have talked about Matt Flynn, it certainly presents an interesting quandary.

The Internship Trailer: Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson Go to Google
If you own Wedding Crashers on DVD and still watch it a couple times per year, you'll probably be very excited about the trailer for The Internship, which reunites the irresistible duo of Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn. After their company goes under, their characters try to get jobs at Google, only with today's economy, they have to start at the bottom: the intern pool. There, they face humourless supervisors and a competitive group of sabotaging peers. Yes, the kind of peers that trick them into looking tor a wheelchair-bound man named Professor Xavier.
We've seen the banter between Wilson and Vaughn before, but I'm willing to roll with it to witness their chemistry again. I'm also excited about the supporting cast of Rose Byrne, John Goodman, Josh Gad and B.J. Novak; even Will Ferrell is billed for an appearance. Come on, how could you say no to those faces? The movie opens June 13, and you can watch the trailer after the jump.

Obama to Congress: Act on climate change or I will
WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Barack Obama is telling Congress that he will take action to combat climate change if lawmakers don't do it themselves.
In his State of the Union address Tuesday, the president said Congress should write legislation that would give polluters market-based incentives to reduce the emissions blamed for global warming. He said if lawmakers don't do that, his administration will craft executive actions that would cut pollution, help get communities ready for the effects of climate change and encourage increased use of cleaner sources of energy.
Obama says progress can be made against climate change without interrupting economic growth.
The president says that with extreme weather getting more intense and increasingly frequent, lawmakers can believe those events are a coincidence or they can act before it's too late.

Marines Were Disarmed for President Obama's Second Inaugural Parade
Feb 11, 2013 11:00 AM EST
Click if you like this post!
He's gutted their healthcare, plans to cut their pay and apparently, doesn't trust them either. David Codrea over at Gun Rights Examiner points out that Marines marching in President Obama's second inaugural parade recently were caring rifles without bolts, meaning they were removed.
?Didn't know the Marines had to take the bolts out of their rifles for the Inaugural,? an email forwarded to Gun Rights Examiner from a United States Marine Corps source observed. ?Wonder if someone can explain why [they] would be marching in the inaugural parade with no bolts in their rifles!?
The email linked to a YouTube video of the 57th Presidential Inaugural Parade, embedded in this column, featuring Bravo Company Marines from the Marine Barracks Washington. Sure enough, the observation in the email is confirmed by watching the video, with screen shots provided in the photo and slide show accompanying this article.
This prompted an internet search to see if others had also noticed, and the Blur-Brain blog had.
?The bolts have been removed from the rifles rendering them unable to fire a round,? the post stated. ?Apparently Obama?s Secret Service doesn?t trust the USMC. Simply searching each guy to make sure he didn?t have a live round hidden on him wasn?t enough, they had to make sure the guns were inoperable.
Wondering if this may be an inauguration policy of long standing that transcends administrations, Gun Rights Examiner made a cursory search and found something even more curious. In the 2009 Inaugural Parade, the United States Navy marched with rifles that had not been so disabled (see 1:24 into that video plus the final slide).
As Gateway Pundit points out, this isn't the first time Marines have been disarmed for an Obama administration event.?
?In a sign of the nervousness surrounding Mr. Panetta?s trip, the Marines and other troops who were waiting in a tent for the defense secretary to speak were abruptly asked by their commander to get up, place their weapons ? M-16 and M-4 automatic rifles and 9-mm pistols ? outside the tent and then return unarmed. The commander, Sgt. Maj. Brandon Hall, told reporters he was acting on orders from superiors.
?All I know is, I was told to get the weapons out,? he said. Asked why, he replied, ?Somebody got itchy, that?s all I?ve got to say. Somebody got itchy; we just adjust.?
Normally, American forces in Afghanistan keep their weapons with them when the defense secretary visits and speaks to them. The Afghans in the tent waiting for Mr. Panetta were not armed to begin with, as is typical.?

Testimony from Pakistan in South Florida terrorism trial
MIAMI -- Defense witnesses are set to testify from Pakistan in the South Florida trial of a Muslim cleric charged with financially supporting the Pakistani Taliban.
The first of up to 11 witnesses will testify Monday from an Islamabad hotel. The testimony will be beamed to a Miami federal courtroom via video hookup. Defense lawyers will ask questions in Pakistan, with prosecutors doing cross-examination using the video feed.
The unusual arrangement was made necessary when several witnesses for 77-year-old Hafiz Khan could not travel to the U.S. Others face U.S. charges and refused to come.
Khan is charged with funneling at least $50,000 to the Pakistani Taliban. Defense witnesses will testify the money was not for terrorists but for the needy and victims of violence in Pakistan's Swat Valley region.

Caloric restriction, exercise help prevent weight gain, other complications in obese women
Feb. 11, 2013 ? In a study to be presented on February 15 between 1:15 p.m., and 3:30 p.m. PST, at the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine's annual meeting, The Pregnancy Meeting ?, in San Francisco, researchers will report findings that suggest that consistent physical activity and healthier lifestyle changes beginning in a woman's first trimester can prevent excessive weight gain in obese pregnant women (with a Body Mass Index greater than 30), helping to avoid preterm delivery, hypertension and gestational diabetes.
This randomized study, entitled Occurrence of pregnancy complications in women with BMI >25 submitted to a healthy lifestyle and eating habits program, should help physicians understand why it is important to offer more specific advice to obese women who are pregnant regarding the amount of weight they should gain during their pregnancy.
"Weight gain should be monitored related closely to the starting weight. If you start with normal BMI [defined by weight before pregnancy divided by height measured in squared meters] could increase 11-16 kilograms. But if you are obese, the expectation is that you should only gain 5-9 kilos -- more or less just the weight of the pregnancy" said Dr. Fabio Facchinetti, referencing the Institute of Medicine (IOM) in the United States.
Researchers from the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia's mother-infant department teamed up with their colleagues in the clinical diagnostic medicine and public health department to create a Therapeutic Lifestyle Changes (TLC) Program. The 33 women in the treatment group followed a regimen of 1500 kcal/day diet coupled with mild physical activity (30 minutes/day, 3 times/week). Twenty-eight women in the control group just received general advice from their OB/GYN. They only worked with single pregnancies and treatment began at 12 weeks.
Their research shows that of the obese subgroup of women [those in TLC group with BMI>30] who stuck with a proper diet and exercise, 77.8 percent were able to stay within the allotted weight gain limit, as opposed to only 30 percent from the control group. Additionally, the rate of, hypertension, preterm delivery and gestational diabetes was significantly lower in the TLC group.
"The diagnosis of gestational diabetes is done [by having the women drink] 75 grams of glucose and looking at the levels after one and two hours," said Facchinetti. "In our study, we found [after monitoring the glucose levels] that 57 percent of obese women in the non-treatment group had diabetes whereas in the treatment group, it was only 21 percent. This is important because [the glucose test] was done at 16-18 weeks and, even if negative, repeated at 24 weeks. In other words, if the first evaluation occurred just 12 weeks after the treatment began, the small amount of time was enough to correct the body's level of glucose."
The study was conducted by Fabio Facchinetti, Elisabetta Petrella, Lucrezia Pignatti and Isabella Neri of the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, Mother-Infant Department, Modena, Italy; and Marcella Malavolti, Valentina Bertarini and Nino Carlo Battistini of the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, Clinical Diagnostic Medicine and Public Health, Modena, Italy.

Phone cos: Cell service holding up after storm
NEW YORK (AP) ? Cellphone companies say their networks are largely up and running after a blizzard dumped up to 3 feet of snow on New England.
Not all cell towers have backup power, so natural disasters can take out cell service through power outages. Last fall's Superstorm Sandy had a major impact on cell service in flooded areas of the Northeast.
This week's snowstorm had much less effect. AT&T Inc. says the "vast majority" of its cell towers in the hardest-hit states are operating fine, and work is under way to restore service in some areas. Verizon Wireless, which prides itself on providing backup power to nearly all sites, says its network is performing well. Sprint Nextel Corp. says the storm's impact was "minimal."

Beckham weaves some English influences into fall

NEW YORK (AP) ? Of course Victoria Beckham had hot cups of tea at the ready at her New York Fashion Week show on Sunday. It was cold outside, and Beckham knows how to take care of her guests, just like she does her customers.
The cozy, refined, do-it-the-right-way vibe made it to the runway. She has figured out how to keep the signature chic that has made her label a fashion powerhouse instead of celebrity flavor of the week, while pushing the envelope just enough to keep it interesting.
The most unexpected looks at the show at the New York Public Library's grand entrance hall were the flashes of bright yellow, including a sleeveless trench; the techno shine she added to pleated skirts that the audience could only see as the models walked; and the long cape-style tuxedo coat. That coat looked like it belonged to a husband or boyfriend and would be draped over a woman's shoulders as she made her way home from a fancy wintertime event. "It's sharp, refined ... feels very sexy."
It's worth mentioning her that David Beckham sat in the front row, as he always does, and then held their young daughter, Harper, in his arms backstage as his wife did post-show interviews.
The designer said she is "spending more time in England, although I miss America, but you see England in the fabrics."
Beckham's opening look was a windowpane plaid coat, and she also incorporated more sweaters and knits into the collection. There was a nod to mod with some geometric, colorblocked shift dresses.
One of the important evolutions for fall is the softer shoulder, which she used to tweak one of her popular zip-back, slim-fit dress silhouettes.
For shoes, she put models in lower kitten heels, made in collaboration with Manolo Blahnik, which was a bit of a surprise for a woman known for skyscraper stilettos.
"I'm always designing what I want to wear," she said.
She also confirmed that she'll continue to show her clothes to retailers, editors and stylists in New York each season, even though her studio ? and now her family ? is back in London. And David Beckham recently announced that he was joining a Paris-based soccer club.
"I am excited about spending more time in Paris," Victoria Beckham added.
